Sour Field Production and Sulphur Management - Event details   02/15/2009 - 02/18/2009 TBA, Abu Dhabi, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES   Description Sour fields, in particular gas, account 15%-20% of Middle East reservoirs, most of which are still undeveloped due to harsh operational conditions. With growing demand for oil and gas, there is an increased attention towards exploration of undeveloped complex reservoirs containing sour oil and gas, with high levels of H2S and CO2. UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar are amongst Middle Eastern leaders with significant activities in sour field development, despite considerable financial requirements. Although methods of H2S and CO2 removal are well established and understood, there still remains a gap for further development and improvement of technologies and processes needed to achieve optimal production at lower costs. 1. Combating Corrosion - Due to highly corrosive nature of these fields causing asset failure, existing technologies become marginally economical, driving the need for development of alternative technologies. 2. Identifying Technological Advancements - Technology utilization requires billions of dollars in investment before successful applications can be evaluated. Analysing historically successful case studies from global sulphur producers is essential for identifying effective technologies. 3. Sulphur Recovery/Production – Producing elemental sulphur, treating, storing and transporting it require further investments and developments and poses its unique engineering and operational challenges which needs to be addressed.
