This increasing focus on network cost optimisation is evidenced by the growing number of operators creating ‘Network Economics’ departments within their organisations. Strong competition from alternative service providers and shrinking margins pressure mobile operators to cut network costs. At the same time emerging technologies and services, essential for retaining profitability, require new investment in the network infrastructure. In order to strike the right balance and achieve optimal levels of network cost optimisation, operators need to evaluate their existing network operations, carefully plan future infrastructure investments and assess the viability of other cost reduction initiatives such as network sharing and outsourcing/managed services.
