While these high price levels have brought prosperity and optimism to coal producers the world over, they have also led to a re-evaluation of the worth of the global coal reserves. Nowhere is this more pertinent than India with its massive coal wealth. If there was a beauty parade for coal qualities, Indian coal would not get the tiara: high in all the qualities you don’t want in a coal. But it has huge reserves which has had some of the major Indian coal players talking of quadrupling production to two billion tonnes annually, despite huge planning issues that continue to hamper current development. At today’s price levels much can be done to enhance the attractiveness of these reserves. India, of course, will import more tonnages of both steam and coking coal but the very high levels being talked of a year ago look less certain as more attention is being given to mining captive blocks of coal identified for third-party exploitation. Whereas washing coal, once thought of as being prohibitively expensive, is suddenly becoming an attractive option with investment into this sector really beginning to flow.
